A One day National Webinar on New Education policy 2020: Challenges and Opportunities was organised by the UGC cell of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Indian Economic Association on September 12, 2020.
The Vice Principal of the College Dr. Sarabjeet Kaur introduced the College and welcomed all the eminent delegates and participants to the webinar.The concept note was given by Dr. Kanwaljit Kaur Marwaha, she hailed the NEP 2020 as a welcome move to revamp education and transform India into a knowledge hub with emphasis on learning and critical thinking. She emphasised that education rooted in Indian ethos is the best education as envisaged by NED.
Prof. D. K. Madaan, Secretary IEA and Head, School of Social Sciences Punjabi University, Patiala highlighted NEP and brought into focus the discrepancy in gross enrollment ratio of India vis a vis the rest of the world. He suggested an increase in public funding for capacity building of infrastructure and faculty through CSR.
Prof. Rohini Prasad, Former Vice Chancellor SGGS Vishwavidyala University, Ambikapur emphasised the vision document of the NEP 2020 which seeks to connect education to India’s rich cultural and spiritual values along with technical knowledge. He felt that the introduction of India and Indianness to the younger generation is a welcome step and it will also stop the commercialisation of education.
Prof. Vinayak S. Deshpandey, Former Pro VC RTM, Nagpur University, in his keynote address indicated that imagination is the true sign of learning. The policy is geared towards
3 transformationofeducationtowardsdevelopingcriticalthinkingbyH -teachingthehead,hand
and heart at the curriculum and institutional level.
Prof. Saamdu Chettri, Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness, IIT Kharagpur conducted a brief meditation exercise and elaborated on the philosophical aspect of education which is being addressed by the policy through the introduction of Sanskrit and empowering women. Major universities of the world are trying to decode Sanskrit language for furthur invention, innovation and discovery in the field of mathematics, physics, medicine, statistics etc.
Prof. N.K. Taneja Honourable Vice Chancellor, Ch. Charan Singh University Meerut in his presidential address, pointed out that our present education system is not geared towards employability of students. The policy seeks to break the vicious cycle of low standard education and reorient all stakeholders towards holistic and excellence in teaching. He emphasised the role of teacher/faculty and leadership of institutions like VC, Principals, Dean etc to perform the big roles.
Prof. V.K. Malhotra,Member Secretary ICSSR and President, IEA was among the audience.The National Webinar was a huge success with over 500 participants from India and abroad.
